An innovative approach to help smokers quit their unhealthy habits.

Tools Used

Project Overview

Stopify is a dedicated platform aimed to assist smokers at quitting their unhealthy habits. We understand how challenging the process of quitting smoking can be, which is why we innovated a solution and strong support to help smokers on their journey towards smoking freedom.

The problem statement

Many people struggle to quit smoking due to a lack of support and motivation, posing a significant challenge to their overall well-being.

Project Goals

To create an application that helps build & track healthy habits

Encourage / motivate users to take action

Create awareness about the unhealthy lifestlyle

User problems

Smokers encounter a significant challenge when attempting to quit smoking due to the absence of a comprehensive support system and resources.This lack of support makes it difficult for smokers to stay motivated and effectively break free from their smoking habit, ultimately hindering their journey towards a healthier lifestyle.

Lack of awareness about the health issues that smoking can cause

They don’t have a roadmap to lead a healthier lifestyle

Possible Solutions

Based on the all the information collected through research and findings, I figured that an application will require following functionality to promote a healthy lifestyle

Provide users the ability to control / edit and track their progress

Grant them freedom, by having “cheat days”

Inform them about healthy habits and show them a guided path towards building that habit

Create a new “challenges” flow that helps users feel rewarded by completing challenges and reaching milestones.

Create a platform that focuses on users following a step-by-step guide on quitting smoking.

Send reminders & daily notification to keep users aware of their upcoming tasks

Allow users to connect with their peers, to communicate or challenge them in building a habit or completing a task

Understanding the Problem

Before touching anything design, I wanted to understand the impact of smoking on public health, and what causes smokers to relapse.

According to Statistic Canada, around 3.2 million Canadians were either regular or occasional smokers in 2021, ranked #112 globally.

Primary Research

To better understand smokers, I conducted Q/A sessions with potential users who have experienced such challenges when trying to quit smoking.

During these research phase, I also tried to understand;

Why do people choose to become a smoker

Their challenges when trying to quit smoking

Their main goal for users to quit smoking

Secondary Research

In order to come up with solutions / features that will be helpful for users, I wanted to understand the psychology of how someone form smoking habits and why some smokers choose not to quit.

After gathering insights from interviews and discussion from people. I identified key elements that answer my initial concerns:

Ex-smokers started with incredibly small habits to help them stop smoking like chewing gum, and smoking less and less everyday;

Smokers who try to quit fear that they’ll lose their friends;

Smokers are concerned that their mental health issues will get worse;

Smokers rely solely on cigarettes do de-stress throughout the day;

The fear of failure. The idea of quitting seems impossible.

Success & Failure Metrics

I will know the app is successful if it works for users to quit smoking without relapse. In addition, if I see 5-star ratings in the app store and newly registered users.

I will know that the app is failing if it does not help users to achieve quitting smoking and also if I see 3-star ratings (and below) in the app store.
